My mother widowed unexpectedly before 65, leaving her without many of the safety nets that one would expect after 30+ years of marriage.
As would be the case with most of us, once the chips settled, the one reminisce of substantial emotional and financial value that remained to safeguard her future was her home.
When Hurricane Irma struck that home, I saw the ease with which the people addressing her claim disregarded the value of what was being discussed.
More importantly I saw the way in which 25 years of hard work and real value were whittled away at, because of an algorithm and a flawed system that allowed for it.
Her carrier offered her a $5k check, which didn't begin to cover the extent of the damages that were contractually owed to her. And I quickly came to realize when getting involved with the process, that that was ALL they intended to pay.
That was, UNTIL, she had someone in her corner who could navigate the complex bureaucracy of a process designed to prevail over her consumer rights and individual dignity.
Having a background in construction, tax litigation and negotiation for many years, I was certain that person would be me. But the more involved I got, the more I realized how little transparency existed in this industry.
I quickly came to realize that even the most educated person could not be expected to make up for such a knowledge gap in the time they are afforded to process a request for their claim.
And because the burden of proof is always on the policyholder, they are bound to be at a disadvantage as they are forced to navigate an opaque claim process and high demands while simultaneously dealing with the physical damages and interruptions affecting their lives.
Eliminating that knowledge-gap came in the form of a Public Adjuster for my mother and me. They were able to quickly pick up where we left off, provide us with the services we needed without coming out of pocket and deliver a settlement over 5x the original payment.
It struck me to not be able to help the most important person in my life protect their most valued asset, their home.
· I realized what it meant to have expert representation and how unaware we all were that:
To allow policyholders equal and fair representation upfront, only to be paid as a % of anything settlement amounts, they directly obtain.
More importantly, I learned from a study presented by the research arm of the Florida Legislature that on average, claimants who used public adjusters received on average 747% more on like claims after a hurricane (OPPAG 2005).
From that moment forward I became passionate about closing the knowledge gap between policyholders and the claims process. So that they too can preserve and protect the things they value most.
I firmly believe that every underpaid claim chips away at our social contract, where homeownership is understood not only as shelter but as the assurance of future financial and social mobility.
Let me advocate to ensure your contracts are honored, you've already honored yours.
We stay in constant communication with our customers until the job is done. To get a free inspection, or if you have questions or special requests, just drop us a line by phone, text or email.
